Best Uses for Stomach 34 (ST 34) Acupuncture and Acupressure Point

Let’s come back to Stomach 34, ST-34 (“Liang Qiu” or bright valley), a point I frequently use in the clinical. I wanted to provide some more insight and provide a more comprehensive overview. This point is effective in both acupuncture and acupressure, and today, we’re going to cover its uses in both. Stomach 34 has versatile applications, and by understanding its location and functions, we can see how it can benefit various treatments.

Now let’s dive deeper into Stomach 34 and its uses in acupuncture and acupressure techniques.

Point Location for Stomach 34

Stomach 34 is located on the lateral aspect of the knee, specifically on the lateral and superior corner of the patella. This point can be found by measuring approximately 2 cun (finger widths) above the patella, along the line of the Stomach meridian. Its positioning makes it particularly useful for addressing knee and leg-related conditions.

Functions of Stomach 34

Stomach 34, being the Xi-Cleft point of the Stomach meridian, is particularly effective for treating acute conditions related to the Stomach and digestion. Its versatility makes it useful for a range of issues, from indigestion to Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

  • Indigestion: Stomach 34 can help alleviate discomfort and bloating by improving digestive function.
  • GERD: By balancing the Stomach Qi, this point can relieve the symptoms of acid reflux and other gastric issues.

Whether through needling or acupressure, Stomach 34 can provide relief for various digestive disorders and is an accessible point for both practitioners and patients.

How to Apply Acupressure on Stomach 34

To apply acupressure on Stomach 34, follow these steps:

  1. Use your fist or knuckle: You can either use the back of your fist, focusing on the middle knuckle, or opt for your pinky knuckle.
  2. Gently tap the point: Lightly tap the area for about 10 seconds, ensuring it’s not too forceful. The goal is to stimulate the point without causing discomfort.

This simple technique, which I learned from Dr. Chuang, a widely respected and knowledgeable clinician at my alma mater LACC College of Acupuncture, has proven effective for both acute stomach issues and pain management.

I’ve used Stomach 34 extensively in my practice, and I’ve even taught it to registered nurses (RNs) who have seen success with it. Personally, I’ve applied this point on myself numerous times with excellent results. Whether it’s for acute conditions, such as indigestion or GERD, Stomach 34 is a go-to, home run point.

This point offers versatility in treatment and is one I regularly turn to for its effectiveness in both acupuncture and acupressure applications.

Using Stomach 34 With Other Acupuncture PointsOne powerful combination I frequently use is Stomach 34 paired with Stomach 36. These points work well together, targeting both above and below the knee, making them particularly effective for knee pain.

In treating knee issues, I often utilize the four corner points around the knee: Stomach 34, Stomach 36, Spleen 9, and Spleen 10. These points work synergistically to provide comprehensive support, addressing pain, inflammation, and strengthening the area.

Techniques for Using Stomach 34

There are a couple of techniques you can use with Stomach 34. First, it has applications in treating digestive issues, such as GERD or indigestion. Second, it has a localized function, especially useful for treating knee pain and acute conditions due to its status as a xi-cleft point.

While we’ve touched on xi-cleft points in previous articles, we’ll explore their deeper functions more extensively in future discussions. For now, Stomach 34 remains a highly adaptable and effective point.

I often use Stomach 34 to address pain not only around the knee but also in areas such as the inside of the elbow or other joint-related pain. This point is particularly useful as a distal point, meaning it can be applied to treat pain on the opposite limb. For instance, if there is pain in the left arm, I may use Stomach 34 on the right leg, and vice versa.

This contralateral approach helps move Qi and relieve discomfort in distant yet energetically connected areas, making Stomach 34 an essential point in addressing both localized and distal pain.

Research on Stomach 34

Let’s take a look at research as some acupuncture points may have more research and scientific examination than others. Even though research on ST-34 is limited, there are studies available to examine.

A 2015 study aimed to assess whether acupuncture at Stomach 34 improves the patellar reflex and quadriceps muscle strength in healthy individuals. A total of 41 participants (12 experimental, 14 control, 15 sham) were analyzed, and results showed a 30.71% increase in knee range of motion in the experimental group, while the control and sham groups showed no significant changes. No groups exhibited significant improvements in reaction time, but the findings suggest Stomach 34 acupuncture may enhance quadriceps muscle recruitment and strength1.
